CNA training programs in Delaware must be approved by the DLTCRP and consist of a combination of both basic nursing classes and a clinical component. There must be a minimum of 150 hours divided equally between the CNA classes and the clinical component. A registered nurse is always supervising during the clinical component and a licensed nurse is required to be with a CNA student when that student is performing any skills that have not previously been demonstrated and evaluated. Students are carefully mentored and trained, which means they will be ready and confident to practice as a CNA once they graduate from the CNA program. The combination of classroom and clinical training prepares CNA students to recognize signs and symptoms of illness and how to provide personal care and basic nursing skills. Students also learn the Heimlich maneuver and get CPR certified.

Classroom curriculum for CNA students covers the role and function of the CNA in the workplace including addressing the various needs of the residents like keeping them safe from any injuries or infection and what to do in an emergency. Students take classes in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and related areas. Also in the classroom, the students receive instruction revolving around the psychological needs of patients or residents. They learn about the mental, physical and emotional states of residents dealing with the changes associated with aging and how they should act or respond in certain situations. It is common that CNAs will work with patients or residents that are mentally retarded, have dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease or a related disorder and need to be trained on how to interact with them.

Additional CNA classes cover the physical needs of the patients, such as their nutrition. Communication skills are stressed in all programs so that the CNA is prepared to respond to a resident in the appropriate manner as well as how to assess, record observations and report back to the supervising RN or physician regarding the observations taken.

One of the most important considerations prior to selecting a career and committing to an educational training program is to find out if there will be jobs when you are done with training and if you will make enough money to justify the cost of the education.
