Nursing programs in Nevada are graduating more registered nurses than in previous years but it has not been enough to keep up with the demand for highly skilled and educated nurses. Nevada’s most significant shortage is of registered nurses with two or four year degrees working in hospitals as well as nurse educators at the Nevada nursing schools. Unfortunately, many of the Nevada nursing schools do not have the ability to continue increasing enrollment because they do not have the nursing faculty to teach the courses or instruct clinical training. Many well qualified nursing school applicants are turned away each year. However, 2010 saw the largest unduplicated enrollment of nursing students in Nevada nursing schools at 2089 students (Graduate and Undergraduate combined). This is a sign that the actions Nevada nursing schools, nursing organizations and the state have taken are gaining headway on the nursing shortage.

Nevada Nursing Job Outlook and Salary Information

Nevada is the fastest growing state in the country and is experiencing a critical nursing shortage trying to match nurse to patient ratio. In fact, Nevada has one of the lowest nurse to patient ratios in the country at 520 nurses per 100,000 people. The shortage is felt most acutely in such specialized areas as critical care units, emergency rooms and operating rooms. What this means is that there has not been a better time to start or advance your nursing career in Nevada.

Several Southern Nevada hospital and nursing executives estimated the average starting salary for newly graduated RNs in Nevada was about $21 per hour, or about $43,680 annually and as of more recently these numbers have increased. In specialty areas Nevada nursing salaries can jump to $35 or more.

If you are a registered nurse looking to move to Nevada or you are a potential nursing student in Nevada, it is worth considering the fact that Nevada has no state income tax and even though California nursing salaries may be higher in some areas, nurses in Nevada will still take home more money each year. Students must agree to work at a Valley Health Systems medical facility for two years after graduation. Other hospitals are offering tuition reimbursement programs for nursing students and registered nurses who wish to advance their nursing education.
