Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Programs

Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner programs will have differing preparation strategies and curriculum for their students, but all have the same goal to prepare advanced practice nurses specialized in mental health care services for practice, research, and teaching. Students of psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner programs are prepared to provide a range of mental health care services to elderly, children, adolescents and adult patients who have acute and/or chronic illnesses as well as those patient’s families. Students are exposed to didactic and clinical practicum curriculum. Programs prepare students to perform psychiatric assessments, diagnosis, case management, psychotherapy techniques, holistic treatment techniques and pharmacological approaches to treatment.

Depending on the nursing school, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner programs may be offered full-time, part-time and/or online giving students a variety of convenient options to pursue this field of advanced practice nursing in an educational environment convenient for the student. An important criteria to consider when selecting a program is if graduates will be eligible to take the American Nurses Credentialing Center Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner examination for national certification as a Family Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner or as an Adult psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
