In General, an master's nursing program will take 18 to 26 months though some can be completed in as little as 16 months. The programs expand on the baccalaureate education to build toward a specialization in one field of nursing. In development are a number of incentives that will benefits those nurses pursuing a master's level education in New York. Senator Kirsten Gillibrands recently proposed her plan to help alleviate or eliminate the nursing shortage in New York and includes a plan to offer 100% loan repayment for those nurses that choose to enter nursing faculty roles. She also proposed incentives for those nurse practitioners that choose to work in under served areas of the state. This is positive and promising news for registered nurses deciding on an MSN program. The job outlook appears to be very strong for all nurses in New York and very favorable for those with a master's in nursing degree.
These great opportunities in advanced nursing roles also offer healthy salaries. According to the Advance for Nurses 2009 Salary Survey, registered nurses working in New York state holding a master's degree in nursing made a mean hourly salary of $46.12. Typical master's educated nursing positions such as Nursing Administrators made $45.25 an hour, Advanced Practice Nurses made $46.17 an hour and nurses in academics or faculty roles made $44.67 an hour.
