The trend to replace the Master’s in Nursing with the Doctor of Nursing Practice is currently occurring at many colleges and universities throughout the country, Minnesota included. The University is in the process of phasing out their MSN programs and replacing with the DNP. As this trend evolves over the next several years we will continue to update these programs. For now, MSN programs at many schools are still the accepted education route for nurse practitioners.

According to the Minnesota Board of Nursing requirements for Advanced Practice Registered Nursing, upon completion of a nurse practitioner program, graduates may begin practicing while in the process of gaining their certification from a national certifying body approved by the Minnesota Board of Nursing for up to 6 months. As a registered nurse with the certification of nurse practitioner (CNP) you can practice and prescribe medications in the state of Minnesota without an additional license.

Nurse practitioners make a good living in Minnesota. According to indeed.com, the average annual salary for a nurse practitioner (based on current job postings) is $72,000. This number seems low and is quite a bit lower than the national average, but still a good salary. Nurse practitioner salaries can vary significantly by location, experience, organization, demand, specialty and other factors.
