As of March 25th, 2011 there are 595 CAAHEP accredited medical assistant programs in the United States. Additionally, there are a number of other medical assistant schools that offer programs accredited by the ABHES. If your goal is to become a certified medical assistant, pay close attention to the school that you choose to enroll at as you must complete a a program that is accredited by one of these governing bodies. If you complete a medical assisting program at a non-accredited school, you most certainly will not be precluded from employment, but you will not be eligible to sit for the certified medical assistant exam.

Medical assistant schools offer academic and clinical training in anatomy, physiology and pathology, pharmacology, medical terminology, keyboarding and computer applications, record keeping and accounting, coding and insurance processing, laboratory techniques, clinical and diagnostic procedures, medication administration, office practices, first aid, patient relations, medical law and ethics and HIPPA.
