Advanced Practice Nursing Programs in Texas
Nurse Practitioners in Texas are referred to as Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN's). Just as in most states, there are specific qualifications set forth by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) that must be met before you can become licensed as an APRN in Texas. First and foremost, you must have a current, valid Texas RN license. You must also complete a formal nursing education program that focuses on a specific concentration of advanced practice nursing. Such programs must either be approved by the board of nursing or be accredited by a national accrediting body recognized by the board. In addition, as of January, 2003, it is required that all all advance practice education programs be of at least a master's degree level. Programs must be at least one year in length and must also include a practicum/preceptorship
After you have successfully completed a graduate level nurse practitioner program, you must become nationally certified in you specialty area in order to apply for licensure as an APRN in Texas. While you are awaiting results from the certification exam, you may be issued an interim license by the board of nursing to practice as an APRN.
