New Mexico Nurse Practitioner Programs

If you are interested in taking your nursing career to the next level by becoming a nurse practitioner in New Mexico, there are a number of program options available to you. When choosing a nurse practitioner program, there are a number of specialties to consider including, but not limited to family practice, pediatrics, women's health, and geriatric medicine, just to name a few. You may be interested in attending a program at a campus close by, but there are also a number of online alternatives to consider. Online NP programs have helped many nurses overcome the geographical challenges of getting to class and have provided a more flexible alternative to getting higher education. Generally most coursework can be completed online and clinical components can be arranged to take place at a health care facility near your residence or current place of employment.

In order to become licensed to practice as a nurse practitioner in New Mexico, the state board of nursing requires several things. First, you must be actively licensed as a registered nurse. Next, you are required to complete an accredited education program that focuses specifically on the preparation to become a NP. If initial licensure was obtained after January, 2001, the program must be of a master's degree level or higher. In addition, you must pass a national certifying exam in your specialty area and be certified by a national nursing organization. (Source: New Mexico State Board of Nursing)
