Nurse Practitioner (NP) Programs in Nevada
Nurse Practitioners in Nevada are referred to as Advanced Practitioners of Nursing or APN's. In order to become certified as a nurse practitioner in Nevada, you must first complete a program designed specifically to prepare you to become an advanced practice nurse. Nurse practitioner is one of the most common APN specialties, but others that fall under this umbrella include clinical nurse specialist, nurse midwife, or nurse psychotherapist. Though not required, upon completion of your program, you should become nationally certified as an APN in your designated specialty. You may then apply for certification to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or other APN specialty in Nevada. (source: Nevada State Board of Nursing)
According to the Nevada State Board of Nursing, if you completed your APN program after 2005, you are required to have at minimum a master's degree in nursing or another related area of health care to become a nurse practitioner. If you completed your program before 2005, a master's degree is not required, however there are a number of other qualifications each of which can be found on the state board of nursing website at www.nursingboard.state.nv.us.
Since most states today require that new nurse practitioners have a master's level education and you must have an MSN to sit for the national certification exam, most NP programs are designed as MSN programs with a nurse practitioner or other APN concentration. Additionally, if you already have an your master's in nursing, there are several NP track post master's certificate programs available.
You will find that there are a limited number of campus based nurse practitioner programs in Nevada. This however has increased the popularity of online nurse practitioner programs for nurses in Nevada. Each of the programs that you find listed below is accredited by a body recognized by the Nevada State Board of Nursing and completion of any of these will make you eligible to sit for national certification as well as become certified as an APN in Nevada. That being said, it is always a good idea to confirm with the state board of nursing directly that they will accept a particular nurse practitioner program before you enroll.
According to the Advance for Nurse Practitioners Salary Survey in 2007, the average salary for a nurse practitioner in Nevada was $84,527 per year. Salaries often vary based upon factors such as where you reside, place of employment, experience, and specialization. For instance, those that practice as emergency care or neonatal NP's often tend to have higher salaries on a national level.
