The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN, 2005) has voted to move the current level of educational preparation for advanced nursing practice from the master's level to the doctoral level. This means that all advanced practice clinical nursing masters programs will be eliminated by 2015 with the standard for advanced practice becoming the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). The PhD in Nursing will remain the accepted degree for nurse researchers and faculty.
Many of the DNP and PhD programs are offered online and offer the same course content that a campus based program would offer. There a number of benefits to pursuing a PhD in Nursing or DNP online. University of Michigan - Flint
The online DNP program offered by the University of Michigan - Flint is open to registered nurses with a BSN, a BSN in another field, or a master's in nursing and NP certification. Nurses without a BSN or Bachelor's in another field will need to complete some prerequisites. Contact UM - Flint to get more specific course information. The DNP program will be eligible to apply for CCNE accreditation in the semester prior to graduation of its first DNP class in 2013. The Master's in Nursing program held CCNE accreditation.
