Nursing programs in Maryland are struggling to graduate enough nurses with baccalaureate degrees in nursing to meet the demand of Maryland hospitals and health care agencies. Maryland nursing schools just don’t have the nursing faculty to keep up with the demand for nurses and are actually turning away hundreds of qualified applicants each year. This is not a reason to be discouraged from applying to nursing school. Projected demand for nurses will continue as 1) the elderly population grows in the state, 2) a large number of nurses in Maryland are approaching retirement age, which will open more positions and 3) the potential impact that health care reform will have on the number of people seeking health care.

What is being done to address the critical shortage of nurses? Organizations, such as the Maryland Higher Education Commission are offering grants to colleges and universities with nursing programs that will enable these schools to enroll more students. Some colleges have developed accelerated nursing programs designed to prepare students for professional nursing but also as nursing faculty. The Community College of Baltimore County, Towson University, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and Stevenson University are four schools that have implemented these accelerated programs to address the nursing faculty shortage and ultimately the shortage of nurses in Maryland. Maryland Nursing Job Outlook and Salary Information

The job outlook for nurses in Maryland is fantastic. There are many state and federal initiatives aimed at alleviating the nursing shortage in Maryland, but the projected outcomes are that there will continue to be a shortage of nurses in Maryland. This means that there will be many opportunities for new and veteran nurses, especially those with an advanced education working in specialty areas. Maryland hospitals pay staff nurses an average of $34 per hour. Salary.com reports that the median annual salary for a registered staff nurse is $60,938.
Salary of course varies by facility, experience, certifications and education, but these numbers can be used as a ballpark estimate.

The CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education) accredited online nursing schools featured on this site aim to aid in alleviating the struggle Maryland is experiencing with this nursing shortage. Online nursing programs do not have the classroom space issue or the lack of nursing faculty that one finds at a campus based nursing school. The cost per credit at an online nursing school is competitive with that of programs at campus based schools.
