Advanced Practice Nurse Programs in New Jersey

As of 11/99, nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists in New Jersey are referred to as Advanced Practice Nurses (APN). Certified APNs have prescriptive authority in the state of New Jersey as long as they have a joint protocol with a physician licensed in the state of New Jersey.

There are currently 17 specialty areas approved by the Board of Nursing where nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists can be certified and practice in the state of New Jersey. These areas are: Adult Health, Family, Pediatric, School, Gerontological, Women’s Health, OB/GYN, Neonatal, Psychiatric/Mental Health, Community Health, Perinatal, Maternal/child, Oncology, Critical care, Emergency/Burns/Trauma, Medical-Surgical, and Rehabilitation.

According to the New Jersey Board of Nursing Regulations, prior to certification a nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist must graduate from a nationally accredited master’s level program that has been approved by the board and is designed to prepare a registered nurse for advanced practice.

According to t he Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), advanced practice nurses will have the most job opportunities in the registered nursing profession. The greatest opportunities will be in inner-city and rural areas where cost-effective health care is a priority. Salaries for nurse practitioners are some of the highest in the country. According to indeed.com, the average annual salary for a nurse practitioner is $88,000 and can range anywhere from $55,000 to over $100,000 a year for certain specialties.

Maryville University

Maryville University – St. Louis offers two CCNE accredited online MSN Nurse Practitioner Programs: Family Nurse Practitioner and Adult Geriatric Nurse Practitioner.

Spring Arbor University

The Spring Arbor University MSN programs are in the accreditation process with the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and are accredited by the The Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The MSN – Nurse Practitioner program is designed to prepare graduates to sit for National certification as an Adult and/or Gerontology Nurse Practitioner. Kaplan University

The RN to BSN program offered by Kaplan University is CCNE accredited. Kaplan University is currently seeking accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nurse Education (CCNE) for the Master of Science in Nursing – nurse practitioner programs. The CCNE accreditation visit to Kaplan University for review of the MSN programs occurred in November, 2011. Graduates of unaccredited nurse practitioner programs are not eligible to sit for national certification exams. The majority of states require nurse practitioners to be nationally certified for licensure to practice. Currently the Online MSN – Adult NP and Family NP programs are only available in Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and South Dakota.
