Massachusetts Nurse Practitioner Programs

To become a Nurse Practitioner in Massachusetts, you must possess a current RN license in the state and complete a nationally accredited Master’s in Nursing program for Nurse Practitioners. Upon completion of your program, you must obtain approval from the Massachusetts Board of Nursing to practice as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN). The board will grant you approval in one of four areas dependent upon what type of program you have completed: Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, Nurse Anesthetist, or Psychiatric Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist. After receiving approval from the board to practice, you may submit applications to the Department of Public Health and the DEA to request prescribing privileges. This approval process is the same for other areas of advance practice nursing in Massachusetts as well.
