Maine Nurse Practitioner (NP) Programs

As of January 1, 2006, a Master's Degree in Nursing with a specialization in the area of Nurse Practitioner is required in Maine. Maine is one of only a few states that allows Nurse Practitioners to practice independently. Legislation was passed in 1995 to allow Nurse Practitioners, who have practiced under the supervision of a licensed physician or another Nurse Practitioner for 24 months, to practice within the same practice category as an independent practitioner. Nurse Practitioners in Maine are assigned a unique provider number by managed care companies and can bill for services.

Nurse Practitioner programs teach theoretical nursing concepts, principles and processes that will help guide Nurse Practitioners in their advanced clinical practice role. Nurse Practitioner students also gain knowledge about current and future issues affecting nursing and the health care system as a whole and the Nurse Practitioner's part in these issues.

Online Nurse Practitioner programs have become extremely popular across the country due to the flexibility they allow. Working registered nurses can more easily balance their work, life and school. Most programs are identical in content to campus based programs and many colleges and universities will offer both options.

Nurse Practitioner Salaries in Maine

Salary will depend heavily on geographic location, specialty, employer, experience, and other factors. Nurse practitioners in Maine can earn anywhere from $36,000 to over $70,000 a year depending on the previously mentioned factors.

As with the rest of the country, the need for cost effective health care options, retirement of nurse practitioners, a shortage in the supply of nurse practitioners and the growing number of elderly patients in the State of Maine will drive the increasing demand for Nurse Practitioners.
