Nurse Practitioner Programs in Kentucky

To practice as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) in Kentucky, the Kentucky Board of Nursing requires the completion of a master's degree or a post-master's certificate from a nursing school offering nurse practitioner degree programs with a clinical practicum component. A current registered nursing license and ARNP certification through a national certifying organization recognized by the Kentucky Board of Nursing is also required. Graduates of the programs below are eligible to sit for the national certification examination appropriate to their concentration or track of study.

Online master's programs with nurse practitioner tracks will take 18 to 24 months to complete and will include a clinical practicum component as well as a pharmacology component that are required by most states, including Kentucky, for licensure to practice and prescribe. Nurse practitioner programs prepare students to provide preventative and acute health care services to patients of all ages. Students may also choose to pursue specific training in specialty areas such as adult, geriatric or women's health. Nurse practitioners are prepared to work autonomously evaluating, diagnosing and treating patients.

The job outlook for advanced registered nurse practitioners in Kentucky is excellent. The demand for cost-effective and high quality health care in Kentucky's health systems will continue to drive the increasing need for ARNPs in Kentucky. 60 to 80 percent of primary and preventive care can be performed by nurse practitioners, according to the American Nurses Association. Which means that health care systems, clinics and physician practices across Kentucky will continue to look for ARNPs to fill this critical health care provider role.
