Nurse Practitioner - Kansas

According to the Kansas Statute 65-1133, to become a advanced registered nurse practitioner (ARNP) students in Kansas must complete attend a Kansas State Board of Nursing approved ARNP program. They must then apply for a certificate of qualification as an advanced registered nurse practitioner. No other licensing is required. National certification through the appropriate advanced practice nursing certifying organization is recommended by the national nurse practitioner programs.

The Kansas State Board of Nursing approved schools offering advanced practice nursing programs can be found here: www.ksbn.org/cne/gradnursingschoolst.pdf (this is a pdf file).

Online advanced practice programs are not on regular approval by the board of nursing and if one was to graduate from one of these programs they will need to provide proof of clinical hours as well as the amount of hours spent covering pharmacology. There are a number of nationally accredited (CCNE or NLNAC) approved online advanced practice nursing programs that would meet the requirements set forth by the board, however these programs have not applied for approval by the Kansas State BON. It appears that if you have graduated from an online program and received national certification in your specialty you may be able to apply for certification as an ARNP. Prior to enrolling in an online program it would be wise to contact the KSBON as well as the program to verify if the program you are considering will meet the KSBON requirements.

Most other states do not have these types of requirements, so if you plan on practicing in another state and an online program fits your schedule or is more convenient for you then it would be worthwhile to explore your online program options.

The Advance for Nurse Practitioners 2007 salary survey found that the average annual salary for nurse practitioners in Kansas was $76,099.
