Completion of a State Department of Human Services approved CNA training program and passing of the American Red Cross Nurse Aide Certification Exam is required of anyone who will be working in a Medicaid, Medicare or State licensed/certified facility. The first step in the process is to find an approved CNA program. A list of approved programs can be found below or for call Elaine Andrade at 808-692-8115. The second step of CNA certification in Hawaii is, after completing an approved program, to register for the American Red Cross Nurse Aide Certification Exam. Upon successfully passing the exam the CNA will receive a State of Hawaii Certified Nurse Assistant Card.*

The State Department of Human Services approved programs are required to provide a minimum of 100 clock hours training of which 30 hours are spent on classroom instruction and 70 hours are spent in a supervised clinical/hands-on environment. Prior to spending any time in clinical and contact with patients, students must have at least 16 hours of class instruction that covers communication and interpersonal skills, infection control, safety and emergency procedures, understanding and promoting patients’ rights and respecting patients’ rights.

To work in facilities other than the Medicaid, Medicare or State licensed/certified facilities, one does not have to complete the certification requirements of a CNA. However, one cannot work as a nurse aide or call themselves a CNA in that facility and can only perform the skills they have learned or been trained in. Learn more about working as a non-certified nurse aide in Hawaii by visiting the Hawaii Red Cross Website.

According to the State of Hawaii Department of Labor and Industrial Relations Wages by Occupation, a CNA in the state of Hawaii makes a median annual salary of $28,900 and a median hourly salary of $13.90. Both salary figures are well above the national medians reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Based on the projected growth of the elderly population and the earning potential for a CNA in Hawaii, this is a good time to be entering the Hawaii health care sector.
